HOUSE CONCERTS

What is a house concert?

A house concert is an informal, usually unplugged musical performance in someone's living room, basement, or yard. The host and/or coordinator invites friends, family, and members of the community at large to come together for an intimate evening of music (and/or other arts), socializing, and refreshments. Typically, there is a requested donation, all or most of which goes to the performer(s).

Why a house concert?

Performers and audiences alike enjoy house concerts because of the increased intimacy of the events. Performers can see and hear their audiences, and audiences can interact more with performers, making for an utterly unique arts experience. Also, with unplugged music, there are no popping microphones or crackling speakers to filter, feedback, or otherwise distort the sound.

How can I find house concerts near me?

Contact your local music organizations or independent musicians' guild. Or, search online. (Visit the website lisited at the bottom of this page.)

How can I arrange for a concert in my home?

Contact performers, establish a guest list, arrange for seating and refreshments, and publicize the event (well in advance) to increase community participation. If you live in the Takoma Park, MD, area, you can also work with Greta to co-host The Bardhouse. The Bardhouse is a house concert and literary series which Greta coordinates and co-hosts in various people's homes.

Whom should I invite to perform?

Well, Greta, of course! And/or any of your other favorite artists. If you don't know who to invite, ask Greta. She can suggest some first-rate local and nationally touring performers who'd be more than happy to hear from you.
